Floyd Lee Corkins II has been formally charged with the Aug. 14 shooting of the security guard at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the conservative group the Family Research Council (FRC), according to the Huffington Post.
A grand jury indicted Corkins on a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and two D.C. offenses: assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a handgun during a crime of violence.
A law-enforcement official said that during a scuffle with the guard, Corkins expressed views different from those of the FRC, the Washington Post stated. The official also said Corkins was carrying a bag that had a Chick-Fil-A bag inside. Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy has expressed views about same-sex marriage that are similar to the council’s.
Afterwards, Perkins accused the Southern Poverty Law Center of sparking hatred that led to Corkins’ actions, calling the shooting “an act of domestic terrorism,” which led to angry responses from pro-LGBT groups.
Corkins had volunteered at a community center for LGBT individuals.
