In a small space on North Clark Street, you are sure to be transported to Latin America by the women of El Teatro Luna, Chicago’s first and only all-Latina theatre.
Now in its 12th season, the theater was born from a growing concern that many of the few parts written for Latina women were often given to non-Latina actresses. Combating this phenomenon currently is the theatre’s Solo Tres, a presentation of three solo plays. This includes Putas!, originally written for a single actress but adapted with the playwright to use a total of five actresses.
The autobiographical show, written by Liza Ann Acosta and directed by Alexandra Meda, tells the story of Liza Ann’s life growing up through the eyes of an adult Liza Ann herself through a series of small vignette-style tales portraying the strong personalities of her mother, grandmother, great-aunt and the other women in her life. It is through these remembrances that Liza Ann begins to question and redefine the idea of the independent woman on her terms. While set in the brothels and nunneries in Puerto Rico, the themes explored in this new work ring true to women of all cultures and backgrounds and is not to be missed.
Teatro Luna is located at 3914 N. Clark St. Performances run Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m.
