(Chicago). On Saturday, June 15, Sappho’s Salon, Women & Children First Bookstore’s monthly salon night for lesbians and their friends, presents Queer 80s Prom. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. There is a $7-$10 sliding-fee admission charge that includes cake and punch. All lesbians and their friends are invited to participate. Proceeds benefit the not-for-profit Women’s Voices Fund.
At Queer 80s Prom. Sappho’s house DJ SpinNikki will spin the best/worst prom music from the 80s, and prizes will be awarded for best 80s prom costume (the school spirit award), and for two winners of our social schmooze contest, who will be named prom queens or kings. Prizes include gift certificates from local Andersonville businesses such as m. henry, The Neo-Futurists, Early to Bed, the Swedish Bakery, and Big Jones.
Held on the third Saturday of each month, Sappho’s Salon invites the best in local and national touring lesbian entertainment, from spoken word artists and musicians to queer burlesque performers, comics, visual artists, performance artists, and more to present their work in an intimate cabaret-style setting, to a convivial audience of queer gals and their pals. Features of each Sappho’s include a live DJ, as well as food, wine, and ample time for mingling. Sappho’s curator and host, Kathie Bergquist, launched the first Sappho’s Salon in June 2008. The Queer 80s Prom marks Sappho’s Salon’s five-year anniversary.
