On Aug. 5, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park lit up with Broadway shows and stars despite the light rain as Broadway in Chicago held a summer concert. Local television personalities Janet Davies, Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini hosted as 10 different segments from upcoming shows had the crowds rising to their feet for ovations.

Wicked returns Oct. 30-Dec 21, celebrating its 10th anniversary on Broadway. Million Dollar Quartet continues to have a successful run at the Apollo Theater, spotlighted on this evening with a lively rendition of classic impersonations.

Flashdance: The Musical arrived for its debut the day before opening night with belting singers. Evita had the fiery Eva Peron personality down pat but no crying for Argentina and no Ricky Martin to be seen. Once The Musical proved that movie translations can work well, as opposed to the shaky Ghost The Musical that hopefully has a comedic Whoopi Goldberg character role to keep it alive.

Speaking of characters, Elf was flamboyant and lively putting everyone in the holiday spirit. People are already counting the shopping days before Christmas and the stop-motion Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical looks like a hit for Emerald City Theatre, with local talent Michael Kingston carted around as a snowman.

The grand finale was Motown: The Musical, straight from New York, and it was worth the wait. A recording of Berry Gordy announcing the Chicago debut of the show was followed by amazing vocal and dance moves. It was primarily Raymond Luke Jr., who channeled young Michael Jackson, who brought people to their feet.
