Daniel Sotomayor—renegade ACT UP activist and America’s first nationally syndicated, openly gay political cartoonist—would have turned 55 Aug. 30. Before we lost him to AIDS 21 years ago, he captured LGBT life in more than 200 clever—and often infuriating—cartoons, many of which skewered the latest trends sweeping our culture.

In 1989 he addressed the then-cutting-edge controversy of domestic partnerships. Today, Illinois stands on the brink of same-sex marriage. Sadly, we will never know how Danny might have addressed what was unimaginable to us in 1989. But we’re pretty sure he would be joining the March on Springfield in October—he was never one to miss a good protest. We miss you Danny… the silence is deafening.

Your pal,

Lori
