WASHINGTON, DC – The American Military Partner Association (AMPA), the nation’s premier resource and support network for LGBT military families, released the following statement today in response to the decision by the Department of Defense to recognize same-gender marriage licenses issued by jurisdictions within the state of New Mexico. For more information on this announcement, contact the Kirtland AFB Public Affairs Office at 505-846-4704.

“The 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander at Kirtland Air Force Base, Colonel Tom Miller, did an outstanding job of quickly correcting the situation when same-gender military spouses were turned away from enrollment for military benefits because they had a marriage license from the state of New Mexico,” said Stephen Peters, president of AMPA. “We look forward to the day when the entire state of New Mexico and every state of our union grants marriage equality and recognizes the right of all of our citizens to have equal protection and benefits that come with marriage.”
