The New Black—a documentary that follows African-American advocates on both sides of the 2012 campaign for Maryland’s Question 6, a referendum launched by opponents of the state’s same-sex marriage bill—has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary (Theatrical), according to the L.A. Times.

Chicagoan Yvonne Welbon, a lesbian, is one of the film’s producers; Yoruba Richen was another producer, as well as the writer and director. The awards will air Feb. 22.
