A man arrested in the death of Clarksdale, Miss., mayoral candidate Marco McMillian has been indicted on a charge of murder, according to SFGate.com. (The Washington Post had reported that McMillian was gay.)
The circuit clerk’s office said that Lawrence Reed was indicted Feb. 11 by a grand jury in Quitman County. Prosecutors say phone records indicate McMillian and Reed knew each other before the aspiring politician’s nude, battered body was found Feb. 27, 2013.
“Today’s indictment ensures that Marco’s family will get their day in court,” said D’Arcy Kemnitz, executive director of the LGBT Bar, in a statement. “The trial court must reject any assertion that LGBT people can be targeted because of who they are.”
