NewTown Writers Press proudly presents Volume 17 of Off the Rocks, an annual anthology series by, for, and about the queer community. Since 1980, NewTown Writers has published, performed, and promoted the work of GLBT writers and artists. Created by Randy Gresham, NTW continues to uphold its mission to foster queer literature and its commitment to provide the local, national, and international queer community with a multitude of opportunities to speak up and speak out, and to be heard loud and queer.
The newest edition of Off the Rocks explores the theme of subtext: reading between, behind, beneath, and beyond the lines. Subtext is standard in culture. Whether on the screen, on the stage, or on the page, subtext is here, it’s queer, and we’re used to it. From The Children’s Hour to Anne of Green Gables, Jo in Little Women to Jo on The Facts of Life, subtext is visible even when GLBTs are not. To that end, it is perniciously perceptive and delightfully deceptive. And it is always—inherently, if not transparently—subversive. Because generally speaking, what isn’t spoken speaks louder, clearer, and queerer than what is.
Volume 17 of Off the Rocks is dedicated to writer, performer, and Chicagoan Cookie Crumbles, and features the work of 28 contributors, nearly a dozen of whom are local, and all of whom identify as GLBT: Glorious, Liberated, Bodacious, and Tenacious.
