This Thanksgiving season marked the 40th anniversary of GroceryLand, located at 5543 N. Broadway. Now known as Vital Bridges under the Heartland Alliance, the vision of GroceryLand has expanded to two more locations on the South and West sides of Chicago. GroceryLand originated as a means for people with HIV to find affordable groceries—especially around the holidays.
Mostly volunteer-run, GroceryLand provides meal delivery to homebound clients in addition to its well-stocked grocery shelves. Lori Cannon, one of the founders, has continued to be one of the primary faces of not just GroceryLand but also within the greater movement that GroceryLand aims to address: that marginalized people in the LGBT community often face issues with HIV and homelessness.
