(Chicago) — The LGBT and Allies Special Interest Group (SIG) of Chicago Area Mensa, part of American Mensa, Ltd., announces its reactivation. Sixteen local area Mensa members who showed an interest in reactivating the group met on December 20 at Ann Sather Restaurant on Belmont to formulate the next steps and develop target communities for outreach.

In addition to gay men, the group plans social activities and informational campaigns to reach out to women, people of color and transgender persons. Participation in local community and charitable events was also discussed. Originally known as the Gay SIG, the group was founded in 1978 by Dick Stein. “I’m excited that we now have the beginnings of a committed, organized group,” said Jim Cundiff, coordinator of the LGBT and Allies Special Interest Group. “Our next mission is to reach out to under-served communities and expand our presence in the community as a whole.”

Anyone interested in joining Mensa can submit prior evidence of qualification or take a proctored IQ test. The next testing for Chicago Area Mensa will be January 24, 2015. Interested persons can contact testing@chicago.us.mensa.org or (312) 666-1091 to secure a seat at the upcoming test. Alternately, interested applicants can give evidence of a score in the top two percent of the general population on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. A partial list of accepted tests and scores can be found at us.mensa.org/testscores.

American Mensa is a social organization open to anyone who scores in the top 2 percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test.
