Amber Monroe, a 20-year-old Black trans woman, became the 12th trans woman murdered in the United States this year, according to WXYZ.com.

Monroe was a student at Detroit’s Wayne State University, and was found shot and killed near 6 Mile and Woodward, WXYZ.com noted.

Last August, Detroit police were investigating three hate crimes, including a murder, against transgender people in the exact same area.

Yvonne Siferd, director of victim services for Equality Michigan, released a statement that read, in part, “We have no idea yet whether this attack was fueled by transphobia, but we do know that Amber’s murder is the 12th murder of a transgender woman in the United States this year, and the 10th murder of a transgender woman of color. Transgender women, and especially transgender women of color, are disproportionately affected by violence.”
