Today, Tuesday, August 18 in Los Angeles at 5:00 p.m., LGBTQ activists and community leaders will be holding a rally to call for an end to the continued violence and homicides targeting transgender and gender non-conforming people taking place throughout the country. Supported by the National LGBTQ Task Force, the rally is organized by TransLatin@ Coalition, FAMILIA: Trans and Queer Liberation Movement, the Royal Court of Los Angeles, and LGBTQ community leaders.
The rally be held at Mariachi Plaza, E. 1st Street & N. Boyle Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90033 by transgender community leaders, LGBTQ activists and their allies
“Nineteen transgender women, transgender men, and gender non-conforming people have been killed this year alone. The level of violence against transgender people, particularly transgender women of color, in this country is unconscionable and part of a national crisis. Last night we learned about Tamara Dominguez, a trans woman who was murdered in Kansas City, Missouri. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Dominguez’s loved ones. We call upon local authorities to undertake a swift investigation of another senseless loss. Together, we must continue to stand up against the ongoing systemic oppressions, demand justice and educate the public about the real harm caused by anti-trans violence,” said Stacey Long Simmons, Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs, National LGBTQ Task Force.
Last year, the National LGBTQ Task Force launched #StopTransMurders, a public education campaign to raise the voices of transgender activists and allies working to end anti-transgender violence.
“We are outraged by the continued murders targeting transgender women and gender non-conforming people taking place in California and throughout the nation. We must all do more to protect everyone against violence and discrimination, regardless of who they are. We call on federal and local governments, non-profit organizations, and businesses to join us in stopping these senseless murders,” said Bamby Salcedo, President of the TransLatin@ Coalition.
The National LGBTQ Task Force works to secure full freedom, justice and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people. For over forty years, we have been at the forefront of the social justice movement by training thousands of organizers and advocating for change at the federal, state, and local level. www.thetaskforce.org.
