A new brief that the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) released reveals that 70 percent of the geographic area of the United States lacks any city, county, or state employment protections for LGBT people, according to a press release.

“LGBT Policy Spotlight: Local Employment Nondiscrimination Ordinances” examines city and county nondiscrimination ordinances (NDOs) that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in private employment (as of Oct. 1, 2015). The report details where these ordinances are geographically, their growth over time and the gaps in coverage that remain.

Illinois is one of 19 states (and the District of Columbia) with 100-percent protection regarding gender identity, and one of 22 (and D.C.) regarding sexual orientation.
