Congo Square Theatre Company has announced the passing of Artistic Director Samuel G. Roberson Jr. He died May 21 at the age of 34 of pneumonia, according to The Chicago Tribune.
In a press release, the company said, “He was the ultimate fighter and lived his theatrical life to the fullest, creating and leading an array of successful initiatives and productions for the company.”
Under Roberson’s leadership, Congo Square introduced the “Owning Our Worth” conversation series, which gathered theater leaders from around the country to discuss the state of theater for people of color, women and other marginalized groups with in the arts landscape.
The viewing will be Monday, May 29, 2-6 p.m. at Leak & Sons Funeral Homes, 7838 S. Cottage Grove Ave. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 4543 S. Princeton Ave. A reception will immediately follow.
