Transgender pioneer Holly Boswell—best known for creating the transgender symbol—died recently in Asheville, North Carolina, at age 66, according to a NewNowNext.com item.

Boswell went by both male and female pronouns at the end of her life, and was a prominent activist, writer and leader in the early days of the transgender equality movement.

She is also credited with designing one of the first symbols at the start of the trans movement, back in the early 1990s. In 1986, Boswell co-founded Asheville’s Phoenix Transgender Support Group, one of the earliest organizations to welcome people of all gender identities.
