The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation—the educational arm of the LGBTQ organization—in partnership with the Equality Federation Institute, released its sixth annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), assessing LGBTQ equality in 506 cities across the nation, including nine in Illinois.

The average score for cities in Illinois is 69 out of 100 points, which falls above the national average of 57.

The cities in the survey are Aurora (score of 79), Carbondale (50), Champaign (79), Chicago (100), Joliet (78), Naperville (42), Peoria (67), Rockford (61) and Springfield (65).
