Joseph Stack.

Joseph Thomas (“Joey”) Stack, “Joey”—a visual artist and award-winning architect who lived in Chicago’s Lake View neighborhood—passed away peacefully on Feb. 11. He was 54.

After attending Catholic University and interning at the Architect of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., Joseph worked at Brennan Beer Gorman Monk; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the U.S. court system. He also redesigned the common areas of his condo buildings in Chicago.

He was the beloved partner of 23 years of Matthew Geiger McGarvey; dear brother-in-law of Maurie, and the late Molly and Michael McGarvey; son-in-law of the late Betty Berry McGarvey and Dr. Butler ” Big Doc” Eugene McGarvey of Paducah, Kentucky; uncle of Christopher Lance (Suzann) McGarvey, Heather McGarvey and Mason Stewart; great-uncle of Elizabeth, Christopher Tate, and Corey McGarvey and Alex and Nolan Chancellor; and the adoring and faithful companion of Murphy II the Tibetan terrier and the late Murphy I the Jack Russell terrier.

Joseph was preceded in death by adoptive parents Joseph Stephen Stack and Marian Catherine Stack (nee Baloga), as well as brother Stephen Stack.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m., at the Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), 1133 N. LaSalle St., with the interment following at Graceland cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Church of the Ascension.
