Starting in February, travelers and commuters will be required to wear face masks on nearly all forms of public transportation as part of a sweeping new order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus, NPR reported.
The new guidelines take effect at 11:59 p.m. ET on Feb. 1. Children under 2 will not be required to wear coverings, and neither will anyone with a disability who cannot safely wear a mask.
Under former President Donald Trump, the CDC was blocked from requiring masks on public transportation, but on his first full day in office President Biden signed an executive order requiring passengers to wear face coverings during interstate travel.
Separately, the CDC announced that it would formally extend a federal moratorium on evictions through March 31.
