They include:
—Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes: Kids of all ages (and those who are kids at heart as well as comics connoisseurs) will truly enjoy this expansive exhibit. This exhibition is spread across two galleries, and features more than 300 artifacts including some of Marvel’s most iconic costumes, props and original art. Just a few of the heroes featured include Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk and Black Widow.
Guests will follow the story of Marvel and its influence on visual culture, while uncovering the narratives of characters and gaining insight into how Marvel has impacted and drawn inspiration from the ever-changing tides of popular culture—and this is shown in particular with highlights involving a new generation of heroes that include LGBTQ figures such as Wiccan and Hulkling.
Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes is an exhibition by SC Exhibitions, Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) and Marvel Themed Entertainment. Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes is presented by BMO Harris Bank and will be at MSI through Oct. 24.
—The Pioneer Zephyr: After a year of renovation and conservation work, MSI has reopened one of its most recognizable and largest artifacts, the Pioneer Zephyr. The record-setting diesel passenger train stretches 60 meters (about one-third of a city block), welcoming guests as they enter the museum. It has been part of MSI’s collection since 1960.
On a related note, be sure to check out the sprawling exhibit “The Great Train Story.” One could actually spend the entire day exploring this model-railroad trip that presents 2,200 miles of scenery and stories from Chicago to Seattle along 1,400 feet of winding track. (The exhibit and the thousands of details that compose it are quite fascinating.) By the way, be on the lookout for a particular Marvel character in Chicago itself.
—Michael Jordan to the Max: Showing on MSI’s Giant Dome Theater’s five-story screen, Michael Jordan to the Max captures the basketball legend in his prime as Jordan and the Chicago Bulls made their run to the 1998 NBA Finals. The documentary also presents highlights from Jordan’s life and career, featuring interviews with his teammates, coaches and rivals.
