The local organization Affinity Community Services announced the recent passing of Takeia R. Johnson.
According to Johnson’s LinkedIn profile, she was editor-in-chief and lead writer at Inclusion at Work as well as a Ph.D. student focusing on sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Johnson also had a career steeped in the legal system, following her graduation from the DePaul University College of Law in 2009. She was an attorney at Frost Brown Todd for two years, followed by a clerkship for the Circuit Court of Cook County as well as a job and clerkship for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois.
A statement from Affinity read that Johnson was “a valued member of the [organization’s] community for several years.” Johnson was treasurer on Affinity’s board of directors during 2012-14.
Also, Johnson authored Affinity’s “brown paper” on the impact of immigration policy on same-sex couples—resulting in the organization being able to secure funding “during a very challenging time.”
“While our hearts are heavy because of this loss, we are reminded that Takeia’s light and radiance were [blessings] to all who knew and loved her,” the statement continued. “Her smile, wit and willingness to always be of service to others will forever be cherished. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were fortunate enough to be impacted by Takeia’s life and loving spirit, especially her friends and family.”
A wake for Johnson will take place Friday, July 30, at Cage Memorial Chapel, 7651 S. Jeffery Blvd., 12-5 p.m. Omega Omega services will take place Saturday, July 31, 1-2 p.m., at Cage; and funeral services will take place 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, at the same venue.
A repast will be held following the services at 6439 S. Minerva Ave., Unit 1N.
