Singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega is slated to perform at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., on Sunday, May 1, at 7 p.m.
Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues.
Solitude Standing (1987) is her most commercially successful album. The song “Luka”—about, and from the point of view of an abused child—was her first hit. Also, the a cappella song “Tom’s Diner” became popular in 1990 after being remixed by two British dance producers under the name DNA.
Some of her other albums include Days of Open Hand, Nine Objects of Desire and Songs in Red and Gray.
Tickets are $53-$199 each. The VIP package includes one reserved floor ticket within the first five rows, a pre-show visit to Vega’s sound check and an autographed tour poster, among other things.
