On May 18, Asians and Friends held its first LGBTQ+ prom at the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan Rd. The event both benefited Humble Hearts, a local organization providing support for under-resourced Chicagoans, and previewed the theme of the organization’s float in the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade.

Guests and members snacked on prom-appropriate pizza and tator tots as prospective kings and queens both mingled and participated in drag performances and raffles. The concept for the float will pay homage homage to Disney’s 1989 film The Little Mermaid; the gowns on display May 18, both colorful and intricate, indicate Asians and Friends’s vision of Ariel and her friends will have a distinctive twist.

Prom categories included “Too Cool for School” and, unsurprisingly, “Queen and King of the Prom.” Guest of honor Ald. Leni Manaa Hoppenworth (48th Ward) was also in attendance.

Raffle prizes were provided by Campit Outdoor Resorts, DJ Casper, Lucky Horseshoe, Oliver and Harris, Rainbow Races, the Ralph Childs Estate, Secrets Beauty Boutique, Stir Friday and Token Theater.
