Chicago historian/author/professor John D’Emilio is one of Equality Forum’s icons for LGBT History Month. 

D’Emilio’s day is Monday, Oct. 6. According to the official biography, D’Emilio became the founding director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Policy Institute in 1995. He has taught at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and the University of Illinois-Chicago. Among additional honors, D’Emilio has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities and is a member of the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame.

Some of the other people being honored this month include singer Chappell Roan, actors Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Lily Gladstone, Congressperson Sarah McBride, TV personality Andy Cohen and poet/author Nikki Giovanni.
