DNA evidence could help solve the murder of Chicago gay rights activist Jon Simmons, who was killed in Los Angeles 11 years ago.

The Beverly Hills Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Unit submitted evidence recovered from the crime scene more than two months ago to the Los Angeles County Scientific Services Bureau for DNA analysis.

According to Lt. Mitch McCann, there are no updates to report. No suspects have been identified, and the BHPD continues to pursue leads.

Simmons’ body was found the morning of Oct. 2, 1994, in an alley in West Hollywood. He was shot once in the head, and found by a passerby. He had been vacationing in California with his brother.

At the time, Simmons, 38, was the executive director of the Joseph Holmes Dance Company. He had serve d as executive director of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues.
