Fred M. Zucker of Lincoln Park—a retired gallery director at Merrill Chase and Sears Vincent Price Art Galleries, opera aficionado, dedicated bicyclist and member of Chi-Town Squares—passed away peacefully Oct. 8. He was 88.
Zucker was the cherished father of David, Paul (Susan), and Eric (Margie) Zucker; beloved brother of Betty (Larry) Berkow of Bethesda, Md.; and dear uncle of Jay and Steven Berkow.
Zucker recorded an interview at ChicagoGayHistory.com. Among other things, he discusses the Center on Halsted, his identity and community involvement (joining the Mattachine Society in the 1960s, and many other groups subsequently), among many other topics. He also says at one point, “I’ve never been a leader in the gay community but I’ve been a foot soldier—and a good one.”
There will be a celebration of life and reception Wed., Oct. 17, 3-5:30 p.m. (service at 3:15 p.m.) at The Cliff Dwellers, 200 S. Michigan Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Lyric Opera (www.lyricopera.org) or Lincoln Park Zoological Society (www.lpzoo.org).
