Life-long Chicagoan Peggy Shinner, an award-winning essayist and fiction writer and the interim director of Roosevelt University’s Creative Writing Program, will read from a forthcoming book of essays, Jewish Feet and other Tales of the Body, at 5 p.m., April 3 in Roosevelt’s Gage Gallery, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
Shinner, who has been active on LGBT rights and AIDS issues, is the winner of two Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, residencies at the Ucross and Ragdale foundations and a fellowship at Ausable Press.
Shinner is a non-fiction and fiction writer whose work has appeared in The Southern Review, Colorado Review, The Gettysburg Review,Daedalus, TriQuarterly, Another Chicago Magazine, Alaska Quarterly Review, Fourth Genreand Bloom. Her work also has been anthologized in The Oldest We’ve Ever Been: Seven True Stories of Midlife Transitions, published by the University of Arizona Press in 2008, and Her Face in the Mirror: Jewish Women on Mothers and Daughters, published in 1995 by Beacon Press.
A trained martial artist and Seido karate teacher, Shinner will read from Jewish Feet and other Tales of the Body, which will be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2014.
Sponsored by The Creative Writing Program at Roosevelt University, the reading is part of the ongoing Gage Gallery Reading Series, which is free and open to the public. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
