Phyllis Frye, a pioneer in the fight for transgender rights, will deliver the 2022 Kirschner Human Rights Memorial Lecture on Thursday, March 31, 6-7:30 p.m. at the University of Chicago’s Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St.

Called the “grandmother” of the movement for legal rights of transgender individuals, Frye is the first openly transgender judge to be appointed in the United States.

More than 100 anti-transgender bills were introduced in 34 states during the past three months. Frye will discuss the past, present and future of the fight for transgender rights.

The Robert H. Kirschner, MD, Human Rights Memorial Lecture series honors the life and work of Dr. Robert H. Kirschner, a noted forensic pathologist and a founder of the University of Chicago Human Rights Program. The event’s moderator will be Kristen Schilt, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Sociology, and Director of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality.

A reception will follow.
