John Hisel. Photo from Cremation Society of Illinois

John Myron Hisel—a painter and fine artist in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood who was a native of Kankakee—passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home Jan. 26. He was 61.

John earned his B.A. in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and worked at The Brown Elephant on Halsted for many years. As a member of ACT UP, John was a tireless activist for HIV/AIDS education and prevention, and volunteered countless hours to help improve the lives of those affected by the disease. He will be deeply missed for his wry sense of humor and sharp wit. He was a loyal friend and partner.

He was the beloved partner of 10 1/2 years to Robert Michael Kerr.

Also, he was the cherished son of the late Robert J. Hisel and Patricia Dear Hisel; dear brother of Christine (Ted) Meade of Kankakee; devoted godfather of Adrienne McQueen; and faithful companion of cats Alfie and Galileo.

A celebration of his life and art is being held Saturday, June 1 (time TBD), at Garden Apartment Gallery, 3528 W. Fulton Blvd.
