On Feb. 23, Makedo’s art and its meaning spoke for itself during the Black Lesbian Archives Chicago Tour 2019, at an event held at Gerber/Hart Library and Archives. Before Makedo Productions, she started this as an archival project. It grew bigger, and so did the message.
“The room was packed from the front to the back, it was pretty crowded,” said Maekdo. “I could have just said that LGBTQ women don’t get enough play in the media and at libraries all day long. But instead of just speaking about it, I did something about it. This archival project means a lot to me.”
Nearly 40 people who came out to view the Black Queer Herstory Chicago collection—a collection of video journals and short films of Black LGBTQ women from Chicago. The event also featured Rachael Pierce, a queer filmmaker from Chicago. Pierce is known for her work in the LGBTQ community and is committed to growing the visibility of queer people of color on screen and in church leadership.
“We can make stuff happen ourselves, we just have to put ourselves out there to make stuff happen. Until you actually make the moves to do what you need to do to make things happen, it won’t happen,” she stated.
