Heritage preservation non-profit organization CyArk has completed the first-ever three-dimensional digital record of the Stonewall National Monument in New York City to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
Iron Mountain Incorporated, which specializes in storage and information-management services, sponsored the effort.
The project—the first of its kind to detail an LGBTQ historic site and national monument—uses data to create a photorealistic digital record of Christopher Park and the Stonewall Inn. This record will aid in the preservation of the national monument and make these historic sites accessible to visitors across the globe for generations to come.
The recording will be incorporated into a virtual-reality experience and will enable virtual visitors to learn about the event’s significance in the LGBTQ-rights movement.
The Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, was the site of a police raid in the early hours of June 28, 1969. In June 2016, President Obama designated the Stonewall National Monument as the country’s first LGBTQ national park site.
