The Republican-controlled Indiana House approved a constitutional amendment that would prohibit same-sex marriage and civil unions throughout the state, WNDU.com reported.
The vote, which took place Feb. 15, was 70-26.
State law already bars same-sex marriage. However, supporters say the amendment would protect traditional marriage even more.
Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, is urging the Indiana State Senate to reject the measure, House Joint Resolution 6. In a statement, he said that the amendment “would write discrimination into the state constitution.”
The ban has to be approved by two separately elected general assemblies before it the public can vote on it.
