Uptown organizer and software engineer Sunjay Kumar is running for state representative in Illinois’ 13th District, seeking to succeed State Rep. Hoan Huynh, who is running for Congress.
If elected, Kumar would be among several openly LGBTQ+ candidates competing for this seat in what is shaping up to be one of the most queer-represented races in the state primary.
Other queer candidates include military veteran and queer Latina Demi Palecek and progressive data analyst Ridge Knapp. Also running are former Executive Deputy Attorney General Adam Braun and James O’Brien.
Kumar, 32, said they decided to run after determining they wanted to continue Huynh’s legacy of progressive leadership, especially around housing justice, immigrant rights, public education and LGBTQ+ protections.
“This is a district that has a long history of welcoming immigrants and LGBTQ+ people,” Kumar said, noting the district’s representation by former Reps. Larry McKeon and Greg Harris. Kumar said they want to ensure “we’re not backtracking on our rights” as the political climate intensifies.
Windy City Times is also coordinating interviews with the other queer candidates in this race.
