Today, we revisit coverage from Windy City Times and Outlines of the Oct. 11, 1987, March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. This was a historic gathering that drew hundreds of thousands to the nation’s capital at the height of the AIDS crisis and amid escalating battles over civil rights.

Among the speakers was Rev. Jesse Jackson, whose appearance signaled a growing recognition that LGBTQ+ rights were inseparable from broader struggles around race, economic justice and health care.

Jackson, who died Feb. 17 at 84, leaves a legacy that includes decades of HIV advocacy and LGBTQ+ allyship, including his appearance at this historic march.

Below, we republish Windy City Times and Outlines coverage of the 1987 March on Washington as it originally appeared.
