The majority of patients with HIV who were admitted to Chicago’s Cook County public hospital in recent years were not receiving potent anti-HIV drugs, and many had drug abuse and other problems, according to a new study, reports 365Gay.com.
‘Despite the availability of effective HIV therapy, many HIV patients in the U.S.—especially in the inner city—are still in the 1980s,’ lead investigator Dr. Joseph J. Pulvirenti of Cook County Hospital said.
Most patients were Black and male and nearly three quarters were active substance abusers. Less than half of those with a previous diagnosis of HIV were taking anti-HIV drugs, 365Gay.com reported.
