Windy City Times reported last week on the increasing AIDS epidemic nationally. This week, the Chicago Department of Health reports that in 2002, the number of gay and bisexual men with AIDS increased for the first time in since 1993, according to the Sun-Times.
Sixty-four percent of new cases are among African-Americans—three times the rate for whites and Hispanics, CDPH reported.
Because of new therapies, some people with HIV and AIDS are living longer, which is part of the reason there are more people alive with the disease—9,069 as of Sept. 15.
