Affinity Community Services (Affinity) —an organization serving Black LGBTQ communities and the broader community of Black and LGBTQ individuals—officially began the second year of the Scholars Program, a 12-month training and service learning initiative. The four new scholars for 2010-2011 are Natasha Ceyan, Selena Henry, Helena Mc Blackwell and Sabrina Smith.
Scholars receive training in social justice movements, community organizing and nonprofit management;are paired with a mentor; plan and host an annual youth summit; conduct an independent research project; lead Affinity’s youth outreach efforts; and participate in board meetings and events. The Scholar Program is for 18-24 year olds who identify as lesbian, bisexual or transgender females, and are of African descent.
