Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center was one of 45 hospitals that scored 100 percent on the new Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), a nationwide report by Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the Gay and Lesbian Medicial Assocation that rates U.S. hospitals on their healthcare and non-discrimination policies for LGBT people.
Eighty-eight hospitals across the U.S. were surveyed for the report. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, which is located in Chicago, was the only Illinois hospital to be recognized.
HEI, which is modeled after HRC’s Corporate Equality Index, was created to shed light on the nation’s top hospitals in terms of LGBT policies and healthcare, as well as bring attention to continuing prejudices against LGBT Americans in a healthcare setting.
‘We are proud to participate in the Healthcare Equality Index survey and honored to be the only Illinois hospital recognized in the report,’ said Susan Nordstrom Lopez, president of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, in a statement following the release of the report.
