Democratic candidate for the Illinois House of Representatives in the 17th District Daniel Biss is asking the LGBT community to help elect him. The former University of Chicago math professor held a fundraiser at the Boystown nightspot Sidetrack Oct. 18, where he told LGBT supporters that he believes in same-sex marriage and hate-crimes legislation.

“Anything that is different from completely full equality is not equality,” Biss said. Biss said that while LGBT might not affect him directly (Biss is married to a woman), he “doesn’t want the government to teach his son to be a bigot.”

Biss accused his republican opponent, Hamilton Chang, of being “literally 100-percent silent” on LGBT issues. Biss also said that he is working harder than Chang to be elected, knocking on doors daily.

Biss added that his campaign has been reaching out to Chicago LGBT activists and organizations, including Equality Illinois. Biss is endorsed by U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and state Sen. Heather Steans, among others.
