The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce presented the new event Andersonville Homecoming on Sept. 24-26. As guests entered the area blocked off Clark Street between Catalpa and Summerdale avenues, a $10 donation fee was suggested to benefit the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce (ACC).
On Sept. 24, the Catalpa stage brought in a huge crowd for Dancing Queen: An ABBA Salute Tribune Band. Out singer Roy Kinsey closed down the first night's fun on his birthday before it started raining. Mexican performer Renee Goust headlined Sept. 25 with personal stories and moody, traditional music. The last day also featured music, with CATFIGHT's cover songs and the popular '80s cover band Sixteen Candles.
The Rascher stage had drag queens telling stories; Lynne Jordan and the Shivers belting the classics; and Justice Hill and Nightime Love giving locals a strong set to remember.
DJs played throughout the weekend for those that liked to dance in the streets, and carnival games were offered for those that like to compete for prizes. Vendor booths were lined up and down the main street, complete with original art, crafts and food. There were also many family-friendly activities, including a pet parade.
Andersonville's Midsommarfest usually occurs in the same area, but it is much larger in scope and more focused on the area's Swedish heritage. The neighborhood festival was canceled the past two years due to the pandemic and had run for 54 years. Last year, Midsommarfest was postponed, then later canceled for what would have been the celebration of the 55th year, although a virtual fest did occur. While Homecoming might not return in 2022, this unique festival gave us a taste of what Andersonville has to offer.
Andersonville Homecoming's sponsor was Rattleback Records the producer was Star Events. Visit andersonville.org for more information on future events in this north Chicago neighborhood.
