In the "Field of Dreams" game on Aug. 11, the Chicago Cubs (46-65) defeated the Cincinnati Reds (44-67) 4-2 in Dyersville, Iowa.
True to the nature of the classic 1989 movie, the game was played by a cornfield and with runs being counted on a wooden scoreboard. Also, the teams wore vintage uniforms.
However, in a twist, a hologram of former Cubs announcer Harry Caray sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch, The Chicago Tribune noted. This greatly upset some people on social media.
This was the second Field of Dreams game in Dyersville. The White Sox beat the New York Yankees 9-8 last August in the very first Major League Baseball game in Iowa.
There will probably not be a game there in 2023 because of construction.
Following an off day, the three-game series continues Saturday, Aug. 13, in Cincinnati.
The Chicago White Sox fell back to .500 (56-56) after falling to the host Kansas City Royals (47-66) 5-3 on Aug. 11.
The White Sox loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles in the third, but Royals pitcher Zack Grienke struck out Eloy Jimenez and Jose Abreu and induced Yasmani Grandal's inning-ending grounder, ESPN noted.
The South Siders now open a weekend series against visiting Detroit on Friday, Aug. 12.
In WNBA action, the Chicago Sky (25-10) stumbled again, falling to the Las Vegas Aces (25-10) 89-78 on Aug. 11 at Michelob Ultra Arena.
A high point for Chicago, though, involved the Sky's Candace Parker passing Rebekkah Brunson for number three on the all-time rebounds list. Parker snagged 12 in last night's contest. Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles (who once played with the Sky) holds the No. 1 spot, while Seattle's Tina Charles is at number two.
Kahleah Copper led Chicago with 28 points in the Aug. 11 game.
The Sky will continue on the road to play the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday, Aug, 14. The tipoff at Footprint Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT; the game will air on Amazon Prime Video, Bally Sports Arizona Extra and Marquee Sports Network.
