In college football, Northwestern University (1-11) concluded a woeful season by losing to the University of Illinois 41-3 on Nov. 26, finishing with an 11-game losing streak after edging Nebraska in Dublin, Ireland in the Wildcats' first game of the season.
In the process, Illinois (8-4) won the Land of Lincoln trophy that the two teams compete for every year.
The Wildcats scored 31 in that game, ESPN noted. They didn't score more than 24 in another game all season. What is even more sad/shocking is that during November, NU only scored 22 points.
Despite the Illini's win, it will be Purdue (and not Illinois) who will face Michigan next week for the Big 10 championship. The Boilermakers beat the Indiana Hoosiers 30-16; the Michigan Wolverines routed the Ohio State Buckeyes 45-23in Columbus, Ohio.
Illinois is waiting to find out which bowl game it will be playing.
NU opens its 2023 schedule on Sept. 2 at Rutgers, Yahoo! News noted. It should be the final season for the Wildcats in 97-year-old Ryan Field, which is scheduled to be demolished and replaced with a privately funded 35,000-seat stadium.
