Earl “Peacock” Battles—an outspoken individual known for his longtime activism—died May 19, according to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) website. He was 56.
Battles was engaged in numerous advocacy and outreach groups in the LGBT and HIV communities. AFC stated, “He will especially be missed for his extensive work with Chicago’s HIV Planning Council and his dedication to Brothers United, an organization that provides HIV prevention, outreach and education to gay and bisexual men of color.”
Battles was also involved with Test Positive Aware Network (TPAN), Vital Bridges and Center on Halsted’s SAGE program.
According to Battles’ Facebook page, services will be held Tuesday, May 25, 5-7 p.m., at Corbin Funeral Home, 5345 W. Madison. In addition, TPAN, 5537 N. Brodway, will hold a memorial service Friday, May 28, 6-8 p.m.
