The Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., has current and upcoming movie slates that include everything from older classics to current award-festival favorites.
On the more contemporary side, the Jane Campion film The Power of the Doga movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch that has been described as a queer revenge movie, and that has dominated the 2022 award-festival circuitwill run Jan. 21-23 and 25. Another favorite, the Japanese film Drive My Car, is currently being shown through Jan. 30.
And then there's the animated film Flee, which is about a gay man who talks about escaping Afghanistan. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells (for the first time) the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. The film has also won several awards, including the Grand Jury Prize, World Cinema: Documentary at Sundance. This movie will run Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
Classics will involve films that will run as parts of various series. Pedro Almodovar's 2009 film Broken Embraces (Los Abrazos Rotos) will run Feb. 2-5 as part of the Pedro! series. The 1944 classic Gaslightwith Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Angela Lansburywill run Feb. 1 and 12 as part of the Bad Romance series. The latter series will also include showings of the 1987 Glenn Close/Michael Douglas film Fatal Attraction.
In addition, the 1976 David Bowie classic The man Who Fell to Earth will run Monday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m., as part of the 50/50 series.
