Even in the glittery celebrity-laden world of track and field, U.S. shot-putter Raven Saunders stands outand now she has a medal.
Sporting multicolored hair, Saunders won the silver medal with a toss of 19.79 meters (64.9 feet) at the Tokyo Olympics on Aug. 1, Outsports noted. World champion Gong Lijao of China took the gold and New Zealand's Valerie Adams the bronze.
"I want to give a shout-out to all the LGBTQ community," Saunders said in a post-match interview on NBC.
On July 29, the athletewho goes by Raven HULK Saunders on Twitterposted, "I just wanna give a s/o to older lesbians. Ik many of you weren't allowed to grow up and live in your truth but you are greatly appreciated!!! -Signed a Flaming Gay."
Saunders finished fifth in Rio at the 2016 Olympics.
