In the WNBA, the Chicago Sky won their season opener by defeating the Washington Mystics 70-56 in Washington, D.C., on May 15.
The Mystics' 56 points tied for the third-lowest for any opponent of the Sky in a single game in franchise history. The previous occurrence came against the Atlanta Dream on Aug. 24, 2013a game the Sky won 67-56.
The Sky's biggest offseason acquisition, two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker, had a dominant debut for her hometown team and finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and one steal. In addition, Sky all-time scoring leader Allie Quigley amassed 3,000 career points with the franchise during the third quarter of the game.
With the win, the Sky are 9-6 all-time in season openers, and 6-6 all-time when opening on the road.
The Sky (1-0) will now travel to Atlanta to take on the Atlanta Dream (0-1) on Wed., May 19, at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on WCIU in Chicago and Facebook nationally as well as streamed on WNBA League Pass.
