SPORTS Red Stars fall; mixed MLB results; Bucks out of playoffs

On May 15, the Chicago Red Stars fell to the San Diego Wave 2-1 in the Red Stars' first trip out west to face the new club.

Rookie and Michigan State University alum Ava Cook scored Chicago's lone goal, making this her first goal as a professional. In doing so, she ended San Diego's streak of no goals allowed so far this season.

The Red Stars next play the Orlando Pride on Sunday, May 22, at Exploria Stadium.

—Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Phoenix's Chase Field on May 15, MLB noted.

With his performance, Steele became the first Cubs pitcher to have double-digit strikeouts since Kyle Hendricks on Sept. 18, 2020.

Chicago's Frank Schwindel had a tie-breaking single in the ninth inning while Patrick Wisdom and Rafael Ortega also homered for the Cubs, who have won four of six after a 3-14 stretch, per ESPN.

The Cubs next will face the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on Monday, May 16, to start a three-game series.

—The Chicago White Sox just finished a four-game series with the league's best team, the New York Yankees—and things didn't turn out so well for the South Siders.

The Yankees took three of four at Guaranteed Rate Field—including a 5-1 win on May 15.

New York managed just two hits: a second-inning single for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a two-run homer by Joey Gallo in the ninth, ESPN noted. However, White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech had five sharp innings—and one really bad one in which he surrendered three runs in the second inning after he retired the first two batters, making the most of four walks, a wild pitch and Kiner-Falefa's single to left.

Chicago will now open an eight-game trip starting Monday, May 16, at Kansas City.

—The defending NBA champs are out.

The Milwaukee Bucks ran over the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs—but are now out themselves after losing 109-81 to the host Boston Celtics in the last game of a seven-game series.

Boston needed to win games six and seven after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead in the fifth game that allowed the Bucks to take a 3-2 lead.

The Celtics hit a new playoff franchise record with 22 three-pointers (while Milwaukee only made four of 32), and Grant Williams tied the NBA record for most threes in a Game 7 with seven, tying him with Stephen Curry (twice) and Marcus Morris.

Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo averaged 33.9 points, 14.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists during the series—but it was not enough.

Boston now advances to the Eastern Conference finals against Miami.
