Asher & Lyric have released "The 203 Best (& Worst) Countries for Trans Rights in 2023."
This new study is an accompaniment to its annual LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index to specifically address trans issues.
The countries were rated in five categories: worker protections, protections against discrimination, criminalization of violence, transgender legal-identity laws and trans murder rates. The ratings were generated into a Global Trans Rights Index and a letter grade.
Topping the list for safest countries are Malta (#1), where 16-year-olds can apply for a legal gender ID change without parental consent; Portugal (#2); Canada (#3); Sweden (#4); and Bolivia. At the bottom are the United Arab Emirates/UAE (#199), Malawi (#200), Saudi Arabia (#201), Malaysia (#202) and Guyana (#203).
The United States ended up in 40th place, between Cyprus and Georgia. The United Kingdom is #15 while Netherlands is #18, New Zealand is #42 and Israel is #44.
