GLSEN Chicago announced the winners of three important scholarships. The Aixa Diaz Scholarship and Gift Fund was established in 1999 by Amigas Latinas in memory of founding member Aixa Diaz. This year’s Diaz Scholarship will be awarded to Marieke Guillen-Treadway, a 1998 graduate of Whitney Young H.S. and a psychology major at U. of Chicago.

The Barajas-Reese Scholarship is given annually to a Latino youth who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to LGBT visibility and equality in his own high school. This year’s recipient is Tony Alvarado, a freshman at DePaul majoring in secondary education with a concentration in English. Funds for this scholarship are raised annually by Javier Barajas and Kasey Reese.

The Rustin Legacy Award, a $1000 scholarship, is made possible by donations from Affinity, the Barajas-Reese Fund, and generous individuals. The 2001 recipient will be Isaiah Perry, a senior at Oak Park River Forest H.S.

The GLSEN Scholarship Night is Tuesday, April 10, 6:30-10 p.m. at the Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln. The evening will include the presentation of the GLSEN Chicago Pathfinder Award to Pride Youth Speakers Bureau, and the awarding of other scholarships, including those from CPNA, Exelon/ComEd, and FUEL. GLSEN awards two scholarships of its own as well, and TNT Pride (gay bankers) gives special gifts.
