Gay-rights groups are applauding last week’s re-introduction of federal hate-crimes legislation in Congress.

The Log Cabin Republicans and the Human Rights Campaign have issued kudos to the bill’s 50 co-sponsors in the Senate and 180 in the House.

The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act, formerly the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, would amend the current federal hate-crimes statute&emdash;which covers race, religion, color and national origin&emdash;to include real or perceived gender, sexual orientation and disability.
